The Manitoba 150 Host Committee and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, are excited to announce the summer schedule of destinations and dates for Tour 150 featuring Nakatamaakewin!

Tour 150 presented by Manitoba’s Credit Unions will travel across the province to communities this summer (and for years to come!) in celebration of Qaumajuq, the new Inuit art centre at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, with vehicle support from Birchwood.

The custom retrofitted tour vehicle, named Nakatamaakewin [na-kah-tah-MAA-kaywin], a Michif name gifted by Language Keeper and Elder Verna Demontigny meaning “to leave something behind,” will bring a culturally-rich and diverse display of art to communities across the province.

The vehicle is wrapped in the beautiful artwork of local Inuit artist Kailey Sheppard and depicts the natural beauty of our province. Inside is a collection of Inuit art in soapstone, felt, print, textiles, and other materials.

With an eye on ensuring safety and respecting health restrictions determined by the Manitoba Government, Tour 150 provides a flexible, educational, and fun summer experience!

Le comité hôte de Manitoba 150 et le Musée des beaux‑arts de Winnipeg sont ravis d’annoncer le calendrier estival des destinations et des dates de Visitons 150, présentée par Manitoba’s Credit Unions.

Visitons 150 parcourra les communautés de la province cet été pour célébrer Qaumajuq, le nouveau centre d’art inuit du Musée des beaux‑arts de Winnipeg.

Le véhicule de tournée personnalisé et réaménagé, nommé Nakatamaakewin [na-kah-tah-MAA-kéwine], un nom michif donné par l’aînée et gardienne de la langue Verna Demontigny et qui signifie « laisser un héritage », apportera une exposition d’art riche et diversifiée sur le plan culturel dans les communautés de la province.

L’extérieur du véhicule est décoré d’un beau tableau de l’artiste inuite locale Kailey Sheppard illustrant la beauté naturelle de notre province. À l’intérieur se trouve une collection d’art inuit utilisant la pierre à savon, le feutre, la gravure, les textiles et autres matériaux.

Ashley Tower

Ashley Tower is a Métis Artist who was born in Selkirk, Manitoba and currently resides nearby in St. Clements.

She specializes in small, life size and large scale photo realism.

Throughout her life Ashley has always been fascinated by art. This interest was cultivated during her school years and further developed when she opted for a profession as a tattoo artist. Upon completion of her tattooing apprenticeship, Ashley opened her own business in 2011; blackneon, which is a private studio also located in St. Clements. Ashley’s style and quality of workmanship has made her a sought after professional artist, tattooing clients from all over the Interlake region and some who even travel from out of province or even across the border.

In 2019 she took her artistic career a step further by beginning muralist mentoring with Charlie Johnston, another Selkirk artist who has been painting murals across the globe for over 30 years. Through Charlie’s instruction and teaching, Ashley has worked on numerous large scale murals, some installed onto building facades, some painted indoors directly onto walls and others that are yet waiting to be erected in their forever homes. Some of these include “The Healing Path” in Selkirk, the “Legacy of Love” MMIWG2S interactive mural (yet to be installed at the Selkirk Gaynor family library), and the “Candace Memories Show and Shine” car show mural which is an exclusive collaboration between Ashley and Charlie, and will be installed in Selkirk in May 2021.
Ashley has sold numerous pieces of artwork directly and has also undertaken many commissioned pieces.

She has become actively involved in the arts community – showcasing her work, coordinating art shows, providing workshops, youth art classes, paint nights, and assisting with fundraising. Ashley’s fun and upbeat informative workshops have been an inspiration to young artists.

Many of these young artist workshops were provided to underprivileged and at risk youth who wouldn’t otherwise have access to art teaching and supplies.

Ashley hosted a solo show in May 2019 at Node.594 and held numerous “First Fridays in the exchange” at the same location for the year leading up to Covid related lockdowns. At these first Friday events she invited many artists, crafters, builders and also local comedians and musical acts to perform and come together in a safe and supportive environment. She exhibits her art at various local cooperatives and also displays at the Gwen Fox Gallery which she is a member.

She hopes to continue working in the arts, collaborating with other artists and strives to improve and excel in any way she can.

Elle se spécialise dans un art photoréaliste en produisant des œuvres de petite taille, de grandeur nature et à grande échelle.

Ashley est fascinée par la création artistique depuis toujours. Son intérêt pour l’art s’est développé pendant ses études et s’est accru lorsqu’elle est devenue artiste tatoueuse. Après avoir terminé son apprentissage du tatouage, elle a établi son propre salon privé à St. Clements, sous le nom de Blackneon. Son style et la finesse de l’exécution de ses tatouages en font une artiste professionnelle hautement prisée dans toute la région d’Entre-les-Lacs. Sa clientèle provient aussi de l’extérieur de la province et même de l’autre côté de la frontière.

En 2019, elle a poursuivi son cheminement artistique en s’inscrivant à un apprentissage du muralisme avec Charlie Johnston, un autre artiste de Selkirk qui peint des murales partout dans le monde depuis plus de 30 ans. Grâce à ses instructions et à ses enseignements, Ashley a participé à la réalisation de nombreuses grandes murales, dont certaines sont peintes sur des façades de bâtiments, d’autres sur des murs intérieurs, et d’autres encore qui doivent être installés dans un foyer permanent, notamment The Healing Path à Selkirk, une murale interactive dans le cadre de FFADA2S+ (organisme pour les femmes, les filles et les personnes bispirituelles+ autochtones disparues et assassinées), intitulée Legacy of Love (qui doit être accrochée dans la bibliothèque régionale de la famille Gaynor à Selkirk) et la murale pour l’exposition de voitures Candace Memories Show and Shine, une collaboration exclusive de Ashley et de Charlie, qui sera accrochée à Selkirk en mai 2021.

De plus, elle s’est engagée activement au sein de la communauté artistique – mettant en vitrine son œuvre, organisant des expositions d’art, des ateliers et des soirées de peinture, donnant des cours d’art à l’intention des jeunes et participant à des levées de fonds. Ses ateliers amusants et captivants sont une source d’inspiration pour les jeunes artistes.

Bon nombre de ces ateliers étaient destinés à des jeunes défavorisés et à risque qui n’auraient pas accès autrement à une éducation artistique et à du matériel d’artiste.

Ashley a présenté une exposition solo en mai 2019 à la galerie Node.594 et elle a participé à de nombreux First Fridays in The Exchange dans le même endroit au cours de l’année ayant précédé les confinements liés à la Covid. Elle y a invité de nombreux artistes, artisans,
